Diversified Tooling Group

Advanced laser technology has been instrumental in making the four affiliated companies of the Diversified Tooling Group, Madison Heights, Mich., into a leading supplier of single-source manufacturing solutions to the automotive, heavy truck, defense, industrial equipment, power generation, rail, and foundry industries.

DTG is a privately owned company with third-generation management. In 1973 it all started with a small shop of 5,000 ft2 (465 m2) with three employees producing molding tooling aids.

Diversified Tooling Group’s four affiliated companies include Superior Cam, Midland Design, Bespro Pattern Inc. and American Tooling Center Inc. With the integration of these four companies, DTG has the capability to supply complete tool and die service to its customers.

The first applications for them in laser cutting with Prima Power were given by the need for a 2D laser cutting and they also needed a laser for 3D laser cutting, for making the parts that would be installed on ground defense vehicles. DTG went to the FABTECH trade show that year and purchased the first Laser Next sold in North America and installed it at the American Tool Center. Once they installed the Laser Next 1530 and started using it for trial and process development, they were amazed by the speed of the machine.
